International Conference on Cyberlaw, Cybercrime and Cybersecurity

‘Homo Deus: God is God and Man is Man'—this was the title of Prof. Dr Christoph Stückelberger's presentation delivered at the International Conference on Cyberlaw, Cybercrime and Cybersecurity, 16-17 Nov 2017.

The event was hosted in Delhi, India where Dr Stuckelberger, Founder and President of Globethics.net, was invited to share on the ethical implications of developments in technology, specifically in artificial intelligence and robotics. His presentation provided reflections on technology in the contexts of religion, anthropology and modern cultural trends where he provided insight on key ethical questions and some recommendations.

Among other things, Dr Stückelberger discussed the contemporary boom of ‘big data' and likened it to that of a religion—‘Dataism'—along with the characteristics of one. He says that ‘mathematicians and software developers are the new priests', and, like their religious counterparts, they wield immense power and influence.

The driving point of Dr Stückelberger's presentation was that humans are data, and with modern technology capable of storing, tracking and analysing this data on a global scale, those who possess it have a God-like ability to control it. In these circumstances, the need for values and ethics has never been so essential.

In his closing remarks, Dr Stückelberger left the audience with a caution that man should not serve technology, but technology should serve man and should be a means of spreading not only knowledge but values.
