Globethics.net trains 680 professors in Nigeria
Over 600 professors and lecturers have been trained during six days from 7-13 April 2017 at the University of Nigeria (UNN) in cooperation with Globethics.net. The training on ‘Ethics in Higher Education' was the first ‘Mandatory Training of all Post-graduate Teachers/Supervisors' at the UNN.
Globethics.net developed the programme together with the School of Post-Graduate Studies SPGS at the UNN, the oldest and one of the largest universities in Nigeria with over 45,000 students.
The training was composed of three parts:
1) a two-day Training of Trainers for 50 people among the top leadership at the University (the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellors, Registrar, Chief Librarian, Deans of Faculties, etc.);
2) a two-day training of 430 professors and lecturers at the main campus at Nsukka; and
3) a two-day training for 200 professors and lecturers at the Enugu campus, both in Enugu State in Nigeria.
The reactions and evaluation have been overwhelmingly positive: "very frank open atmosphere dealing with sentisitive ethical issues at the university", "very helpful discussions", "very refreshing and engaging", "lecturers benefited immensely from the knowledge and exposure", "Highly qualified international and national speakers and experts from Globethics.net", "It would be nice to periodically have similar workshops for follow up and to evaluate the impact of previous work".
The training is the beginning of a longer term cooperation to position the university as one with high ethical standards in addition to high academic standards.
Such training courses are part of the implementation of the strategic focus of Globethics.net on Ethics in Higher Education, which includes convening the Globethics.net Consortium on Ethics in Higher Education of higher education institutions. The first meeting of the Consortium is set to take place from 21-23 June 2017 at the Globethics.net Head Office in Geneva.
