Journal Description

Basic information

Commonweal is an independent journal of opinion that is edited and managed by lay Catholics. Addresses a broad range of subjects, including national and international politics; social and ethical issues such as abortion, the death penalty, euthanasia; and science and religion, from a viewpoint that is primarily but not exclusively liberal and reformist. The mission of the Commonweal Foundation is to support educational programs and projects assisting disadvantaged youth. The Foundation focuses on secondary and, to a lesser extent, elementary education. The Foundation also considers grants for educational research and, to a limited extent, health care. Our vision is that all children living in poverty have the opportunity to break the bonds of their circumstance by gaining access to quality educational opportunities and services, and graduate from high school prepared to enter and succeed in higher education or pursue gainful employment to become contributing members of society.
