“The CODE for Global Ethics, Ten Humanist Principles”, by Dr. Rodrigue Tremblay

BOOK DESCRIPTION: “The Code for Global Ethics:The Ten Humanist Commandments” by Dr. Rodrigue Tremblay, Prometheus Books, April 2010, ISBN: 978-1616141721

Is it necessary to be religious to act morally? This book by Dr. Rodrigue Tremblay, author of the pathbreaking book “The New American Empire”, answers no. On the contrary, when people are religious to the point of being fanatical, they can become very immoral. Moreover, to the question “Can religion be an obstacle to morality”, the author's answer is yes.

When people say they believe in religion, they usually mean they believe in a moral standard for themselves, their children and society in general. Obviously, most people prefer to live in a moral world than in an amoral or immoral one.

This book proposes a progressive and modern code of global ethics that is summarized under 10 general humanist rules or commandments. The themes range from human dignity, human life, tolerance, the need to share, and the requirement to avoid domination and superstition, to the preservation of the Earth's natural environment, the issue of violence and wars, the question of political and economic democracy, the separation of Church and State, and the central role of education and knowledge as gateways to personal happiness, independence, and individual freedom. The book is also a critique of many religion-based ethical rules and raises the issue of moral dilemmas.
