2018 Ecumenical School on Governance, Economics and Management for an Economy of Life

A 10-day program on the topic of Global Economics brought together church leaders and young activists from diverse backgrounds in Mexico City. The event took place during 19 - 29 August 2018.

Deivit Montealegre, Globethics.net Programme Executive of South American Region, supported by the Ecumenical Theological Education Programme of the World Council of Churches, participated as consultant and facilitator, lecturing about the connection between ethics, theology and economics for an economy of life. He also presented a book published by Globethics.net:

Ética y economía: la relación dañada, Aportes camino al G-20 2018 en el marco de la agenda 2030.

The Ecumenical School on Governance, Economics and Management for an Economy of Life (GEM School) is a joint initiative of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) as part of the Ecumenical Action Plan for a New International Financial and Economic Architecture, a joint initiative between the WCC, WCRC, Council for World Mission and Lutheran World Federation.

This initiative responds to recommendations formulated in the Sao Paulo Statement: International Financial transformation for an Economy of Life and in the document Economy of Life for All Now: An Ecumenical Action Plan for a New International Financial and Economic Architecture, which identified as a priority the development of competencies in economics within churches.

Presently churches' ethical, moral and theological perspectives on the workings of the global economy have minimal impact on financial and economic policies, business practices and ways of thinking. To address this gap, the GEM School aims to build economic literacy within churches by equipping participants with the tools and languages to effectively advocate for urgent transformations in the global financial and economic realm.
