University of South Africa and Ethics Higher Education Workshop

The University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria
University of South Africa, Pretoria

Pretoria, 25-28 September 2018

As part of its Ethics for Institutions and Ethics for Teachers Programmes, Head Office and its Southern Africa Regional Office will conduct a 3-day training workshop for the management and teaching staff of the University of South Africa (UNISA) followed by one day Training-of-Trainers in Pretoria.
The workshop due to take place from 25–28 September 2018 is aimed at addressing the role of ethics in Higher Education Institutions and the importance of reaffirming institutional values and responsible leadership. The workshop includes, among others, how to deal with ethical issues in the day-to-day work of the university and how to communicate to the entire staff and secure their commitment to more ethical behaviours. At the institutional level, the workshop provides guidance on management tools and mechanisms to be adopted so as to embed values more firmly in institutional processes and procedures including teaching courses and research work.
The desire to further develop capacities in the area of ethics in higher education comes from the critical role of higher education institutions in fostering students to not only be well educated but also to be values-driven, as citizens and as leaders.
As of 2018, offers four programmes to systematically integrate ethics into higher education. The Training of Trainers (TOTs—product No. 22) product offers on-campus training followed with online learning materials. More information about ethics programmes and resources can be found here.
UNISA, established in 1873, is the largest university in both the region and the continent [1], attracting a third of all higher education students in South Africa, offering a range of campus-based and distance learning programmes.
