A Statement of the CEC Bioethics Thematic Reference Group
Recent reports of a Chinese scientist who claims to have applied genome editing techniques to human embryos, which were subsequently implanted and resulted in the birth of live babies, means that the question of whether—and how—these techniques should be used in humans demands an urgent answer. This in-depth report takes a wider perspective on the issue, which concerns all people as individuals and collectively as a society. It challenges the alleged achievement in China as being profoundly unethical, reflecting a disregard for the ethical and professional concerns of the international scientific community.

The collection of essays published in this first of two volumes tries to describe and analyse the nature and depth of the "home grown solutions" as presented in post-genocide Rwanda. The volume deals with: community work (umuganda), Gacaca courts, community mediators (abunzi), solidarity work (Ubudehe), performance contract (imihigo) and cow donation (girinka munyarwanda). The volume also extended research on innovative areas including managing wounded memory in a post-genocide context, reconciliation and healing, family, language and culture as factors of social cohesion.
Policy, Skills and Resources: Globethics.net International Conference Report 2018
Following the development of Globethics.net's new Strategy, Vision and Mission, the Globethics.net International Conference 2018 came as an honest contribution to the urgent search for solutions to a world noticeably and without doubt in disarray, as problems continue to mount. ‘How can we translate and make ethics practically present and relevant in the classroom and lives of students, teachers and professionals who emerge from higher education institutions?' More than 100 teachers, policy makers, research fellows, vice-chancellors, ethics and scientific institutions, consultants, NGOs, IGOs and other stakeholders gathered from all over the world during three days to answer this question. The conference took place on 4–6 June 2018 at the Château de Bossey in the county of Vaud, Switzerland. This book is structured into two parts: the first is composed of discussions and ethical puzzles meant to bring breakthrough insights from the Globethics.net International Conference on ethics in higher education; the second part features selected papers that disclose the conference proceedings.

The book explores the nature and function of the non-profit incorporated company the Church of South India Trust Association (CSITA) situated in Chennai, South India, and analyses the precarious situation the organisation finds itself in with regard to the financial and property (mis)management. This leads the author to make a major remedial proposal, namely, to lift its corporate veil to expose the true affairs of the company for reproof and restoration. Corporate Governance is defined as referring to the rules, regulations, policies and standards required for sustaining accountability, transparency and general corporate integrity. The aim of the book is to elevate the Church to a strong position with regard to corporate governance, liberating it from corporate failures and from inadequate and improper internal governance mechanism.
The Academic, Church and Business sectors have been three independent worlds for too long. Only recently have the ideas and theories of one segment started to develop and generate a strong and acknowledged impact on the other sectors, cross-fertilizing each other. The aim of this thesis is to summarize how it is possible to derive from theology the kind of philosophical anthropology which can serve as a basis for the right management theory together with its implementation. It is based on the Church's Catholic Social Teaching (CST), specifically on its prime pillar of "human dignity", together with the related academic disciplines, while providing a useful performative approach for those in business. The conclusion is an alternative, holistic system, that considers the employees as persons, rather than economic factors.
How can I live out my values and convictions in everyday life? How can I reconcile faith and action? How can we encourage one another in what we do instead of giving up to resignation? Such questions are at the centre of these 365 short texts, written out of and for everyday life: way-markers offering a sense of direction and encouragement.

One can philosophize through lengthy explanations and towering treaties. But there is another tradition: that of the aphorism, the art of the fragment. To make the reader think through one or a few brief sentences, a digest of thought that tries to capture in few words a vivid problematic, in a striking form. Often critical, ironic or mocking, this laconic form of philosophical expression is generous because it is trusting: the reader will understand mere implicit meaning, he will read between the lines. And when will be highlighted the sordid of the human soul, he will not be sad but joyful, for consciousness makes us free. The issue is to reconcile with our own finitude, to accept our own humanity, for better and for worse.

This book sought a deeper understanding of experiences concerning fifteen divorced and separated single mothers, five African American, five Caucasian and five Latino aged 27–52 years, divorced or separated for one year or more with one or more dependent children below sixteen years old. The qualitative phenomenological approach employed in-depth interviews to collect narratives thus illustrating its usefulness in bringing out rich data. The implications of the findings for the Mental Health Profession, and the Teaching Profession for both the mothers and their children are stated. Detailed descriptions of the lived experiences of divorced and separated women and associated meanings clarify particular aspects in their lives that could affect their wellbeing. Certain aspects of their lives that promote life satisfaction are also highlighted.

In this book Islamic law is presented from various perspectives to find the common thread between the Sharia, Islamic law and Islamic jurisprudence. The discussion is focused on the characteristics and principles of Islamic law as a means of providing a general overview of how Islamic law should be positioned, especially in the efforts of formulating legal rules that seek to bring benefit for people. Islamic law is brought from its ideal concepts into practical usage. This works gives many concrete examples of the critical understanding of social behaviours in the Islamic society, such as Muslim clothing and the conduct of Muslim women, by providing meticulous hermeneutic analysis of the literature that is used as legitimation of certain religious conventions. This work instills a deep ethical understanding of the normative foundations of Islamic law in the global perspective.

In October 2016, the Conference of European Churches brought together in Zagreb (Croatia) dozens of experts to discuss the challenges facing minority churches, and religious minorities in general. The European landscape presents many difficulties for these communities. Some struggle with obtaining legal status, some are subject to discrimination, exclusion or even open hostility. Widespread prejudices, destruction or confiscation of property, and barriers to religious rituals and ceremonies make daily life difficult for many communities across the continent. CEC, and the participants gathered at the Zagreb conference, are convinced that minorities bring value to societies, and that deeper religious literacy, enhanced understanding, and fostering dialogue will contribute to their flourishing. This volume contains their contributions to these discussions with a hope that it will contribute to healthy, diverse societies throughout Europe.

'Ethics of Inclusion and Equality', in two volumes, is a reader of 58 articles from the author on all areas of social and political life. Vol. 1 features articles on the themes of ‘Politics and Society'; Vol. 2 includes the authors insight on ‘Economy and Environment', ‘Education, Children and Sexuality', and ‘Religion and Tolerance'. Each Section underpins India's political economy, where India is taken as a referral point for analysis and interpretation. The author address these issues in a direct, often devastating, fashion.

Cyber space influences all sectors of life and society: Artificial Intelligence, Robots, Blockchain, Self-Driving Cars and Autonomous Weapons, Cyberbullying, telemedicine and cyber health, new methods in food production, destruction and conservation of the environment, Big Data as a new religion, the role of education and citizens' rights, the need for legal regulations and international conventions. The 25 articles in this book cover the wide range of hot topics. Authors from many countries and positions of international (UN) organisations look for solutions from an ethical perspective. The authors apply and modify fundamental values and virtues to specific, new challenges arising from cyber technology and cyber society. The book serves as reading material for teachers, students, policy makers, politicians, businesses, hospitals, NGOs and religious organisations alike. It is an invitation for dialogue, debate and solutions.

Geneva Agape Foundation
The first worldwide, international conference for Associations of Christian Entrepreneurs and related organisations united a broad range of Christian denominations, including Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Evangelical, Pentecostal and Charismatic—a truly broad ecumenical forum. The outcome of keynote speeches, group discussions and testimonials was the will to learn from each other, connect to each other and plan how to cooperate. The joint "Faith in Business Geneva Declaration" summarizes the result.
The main focus of this work is that, by her vocation, the Church has the mandate and challenge to teach all nations. It is her pastoral and canonical responsibility. School method of Evangelization was the successful tool in the hands of the early Missionaries in Nigeria. But the State forcefully took over Mission schools in 1970. Nationalization of schools and monopoly of control are forms of state-imposed secularism and moral relativism. Forty years after this nationalization of schools, the system of education has virtually collapsed. Just recently, thestate started the process of returning mission schools to their various owners.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) refers to corporate behaviour that pro-actively meets the ethical expectations of the public and voluntarily contributes to the society. The global CSR movement yields numerous initiatives, standards and legislation. Owing to the need for development as well as the reform and opening-up policy, mounting Chinese enterprises are "going global" with large amounts of capital. Nevertheless, some foreign governments cast doubt on China's strategic intent, and the general public is dissatisfied with Chinese CSR performance. Chinese enterprises must strengthen their capacities regarding risk control, internal governance, public communication etc., so as to achieve mutual benefit with multi-stakeholders and build an image of responsible global citizenship.

The title of the book promises ‘welfare for all'. Of course, that does not mean luxury for all. No, that would be an endless waste that cannot be in anyone's interest. What is meant is something realistic, namely a reasonably fair participation of all people in the infinite and indescribable wealth of our God-given world. Each person, without exception, can be empowered as a human being to lead a self-determined, decent life, ‘prospering to freedom'. The basic idea is simple: the more people there are on earth, the more capable humanity is to make meaningful contributions to a meaningful whole. Motivated human resources are available on a massive scale.

Churches in Africa have vast assets: agricultural land and prime land in cities, real estate in schools, universities, hospitals, churches etc. How can these institutions become less dependent on donations by increasing revenue from these assets? Theological visions, ethical values, planning skills, integrity leadership, fair elections, professional governing structures, anti-corruption mechanisms, innovative strategies and investment partnerships are needed to aid such developments. This handbook offers conceptual knowledge, practical solutions and case studies, written by practitioners for practitioners in churches: pastors/priests, leaders, finance officers, asset managers, donor agencies, students and all those engaged for professional, innovative, efficient and faith-based asset management of churches and church-related organisations.

This book on the topic of ethics and poetry consists of contributions from different continents on the subject of applied ethics related to poetry. It should gather a favourable reception from philosophers, ethicists, theologians and anthropologists from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America and allows for a comparison of the healing power of words from various religious, spiritual and philosophical traditions. The first part of this book presents original poems that express ethical emotions and aphorism related to a philosophical questioning of the grounding of our values for life. The poems are written by twelve authors coming from four continents, for whom poetic emotions are sources of artistic inspiration and that can be used for conflict resolution. In the second part, which features short essays, nine authors tackle how poems, symbolic representations, metaphorical narratives and lies impact the space of possibilities, in which we are moved to action, knowledge formation, and how we imagine the world together. Inaugural Meeting 2017 Report
This Ethics in Education is essential for preparing the youth—the future leaders—to live and lead in a way that is both responsible and sustainable.
During June 2017, over the course of 3 days at venues based in Switzerland and France, Globethics.net organised and hosted the inaugural meeting of the Consortium on Ethics in Higher Education. This coming together of students, teachers, professors, academics, vice-principals and rectors, inter alia, marked the establishment of a truly global collective that aims to create an ethical society through the transformative vehicle of education. They all strengthen the reputation of their institution by supporting efforts to integrate values-based decisions in governance, management and daily practices of staff at all levels; and promote ethical awareness and integrate ethical reflection in all aspects of education. This is report is a detailed overview of the presentations, outcomes and follow up of the conference that took place from 21st–23rd June 2017, that brought together over 60 delegates and individuals from various higher education institutions and others.
This second of two book volumes on ethics in higher education is the result of an international conference organised by Globethics.net with the leadership of the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 2016 on managing and teaching ethics within higher education institutions. The focus on traditions and religions as vehicles for collaboration and co-existence in plural societies has gained great attention both in Africa and elsewhere. The book features 14 authors from the University of Nigeria and other Nigerian institutions, including the Tansian University, Abia State University and Bayero University among others.
The international conference of the University of Nigeria, held in 2016, made it clear that education must assist and lead students to learn to be free, responsible, innovative and creative. The teacher has the duty to guide students to know how to acquire knowledge that is not mere information but knowledge that is reflected, offering essential insights needed for effective living—such knowledge bears the ingredients of ethics. This first of two book volumes serves as a guide providing insights gained through experience from 29 authors, including teachers, administrators and policy makers and researchers, all brought together to focus on how Ethics in Higher Education can be integrated into concrete contexts.
