GlobeTheoLib celebrates 5 years

This year, 2016, the Global Digital Library on Theology and Ecumenism, otherwise known as GlobeTheoLib, is celebrating its 5th anniversary.
The concept of creating a multilingual online theological library offering free access to articles, journals, books and other resources appeared more than five years ago. The idea was initiated by and the World Council of Churches (WCC), represented by its programme on Ecumenical Theological Education (ETE), to promote the sharing of expertise in theological research and education.
"More and more people, participants and many others, including students and professors  kept asking for theological materials. So for me, it was a clear demand-driven idea, supported by like-minded people from different countries. I am proud of the success of GlobeTheoLib over the last five years, which has led it to become a long term project and a key part of our Strategy 2016-2020, particularly in relation to further developing inter-religious ethics and theology," - said Dr h.c. Christoph Stückelberger, President and Founder of
"The idea was brought up by Dietrich Werner, the former WCC coordinator, who is now the Senior Theological Advisor for Bread for the World. He was the main initiator behind the creation of GlobeTheoLib,"explained Andreas Waldvogel, Programme Executive Online Library.
"It is the only worldwide project that I know of that addresses the challenge of a more balanced theological knowledge transfer between churches and institutions of theological education in the North and South, and in the East and West. GlobeTheoLib is an online library that provides a platform for existing digital resources and theological libraries all over the world", he added.
The anniversary of GlobeTheoLib is being marked during the meeting of the GlobeTheoLib Consortium Committee in Geneva on Friday 9 September 2016  with the launch of a new online collection on 'Eco-Theology, Climate Justice and Food Security'  together with a book with the same title published in the Global series. Dietrich Werner, co-editor of the book, will be one of the speakers during the launch.
