Heading towards transformation and development in Africa
Globethics.net attended the 15th edition of the BEN-Africa (Business Ethics Network of Africa) conference on 9 and 10 November 2016 in South Africa. The theme was ‘Governance and Ethics for African Development'.
Our Executive Director Obiora Ike was one of the panellists taking part in the session on ‘The challenge of governance and ethics in Africa'. His intervention can be summarised in one question: "What can be done?"
He shared: "We need to differentiate leadership from governance. Ethical leadership is transformational". He pointed out the lack of access to basic and appropriate education, which is vital for the development of all human beings. Obiora Ike pledged for an integrated approach and for leadership that is both accountable and reliable.
"The BEN-Africa conference brought to the centre the challenge of governance, ethics and development in Africa. The challenges are enormous as they are in the area of poverty alleviation, education, lack of access to quality of life and the overall growing gap of values and ethical concerns. There are, however, great chances for the African continent and its people through integrated approaches. The primary key is values-driven education and an ethical standard that lead to transformation and development. We, at Globethics.net, must start with the youth who are the future", he said.
Professor Divya Singh, Deputy Vice-chancellor of UNISA and Globethics.net South Africa Programme Director, also attended the conference.
The 15th Annual BEN-Africa Conference took place at The Wallenberg Research Centre at Stias, Stellenbosch, South Africa.
