As we live and enjoy the benefits of science and technology, there is a growing awareness that the quality of life is progressively declining and the world peace and even the very existence of life on earth are threatened by our lifestyles. Ecoogical crisis is not just a scientific issues to be left only to scientific investigations for solutions. Nature is fragile and precious and needs legal and political protection and most governments have a Department or Ministry of Environment. Though the Consitutions bind the state and the citizens 'to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife,' we see continuous exploitation of the environment both by the state and citizens, mostly because of economic reasons and wrong development policies.

To examine the complex interrelationships existing between Environment and Law, the Centre for the Study of World Religions, Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, Bangalore and India have jointly organised a one-day workshop on Environtment and Law in collaboration with the School of Law, Christ University, Bangalore, and National Law School of India University, Bangalore.
