We, the Globethics.net global network, invited guests and participants gathered at the Globethics.net International Conference taking place under the theme, ‘Building New Bridges Together: Ethics and Values at the Heart of Quality Education’ in Geneva, Switzerland from 17-19 October 2022, from 40 countries and four continents, representing higher education institutions, student bodies, youth, governments, international governmental organisations and civil society,
meeting, for the first time in person in the post-Covid 19 pandemic era in a world marked by an urgent appreciation of the value and need for human connections, trust, solidarity and shared responsibility, while acknowledging increasing polarisation, uncertainty, and widening inequalities and inequities in the field of education, resulting in challenges posed to meaningful, accessible quality education,
having been greeted and encouraged by and listened to high level political, educational and faith leaders,
having engaged in a rich programme of plenary sessions and ten thematic workshops featuring inspiring and challenging multidisciplinary interventions from highly qualified, international speakers, contributing to the Conference’s conceptual framework of
- Being in COMMUNITY – Ethics and Values for the Societies We Want,
- Being in RELATION – Ethics and Values through Educational Collaboration for the Common Good, and
- Being in DIALOGUE – Ethics and Values for Shaping Quality Education,
We identify opportunities to build bridges by co-creating collaborative spaces for strategic approaches and orientation to foster ethics in the academic arena for the common good, working across disciplines, geographical, linguistic, cultural and political borders,
recognising the particular contributions of youth, partner institutions and individual ethics experts, in the pooling of resources, best practice sharing, learning and partnerships and network, specifically,
- The thought leadership, energy and vision of young leaders, their willingness to champion values and to shape the world we want,
- The engagement of the Globethics.net regional partners, in Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and the Middle East and North Africa,
- The Global Pool of Ethics Experts’ concrete project for the empowerment of emerging researchers in ethics through a doctoral summer school, planned to start in 2024, and
- The Globethics.net Consortium on Ethics in Higher Education confirmation of the increased desire for collaboration, through mutual exchange of expertise, sharing resources, joint research and advocacy campaigns,
We celebrate #GlobalEthicsDay with
- The launch of the new Journal of Ethics in Higher Education, and
- The Living Letter Campaign to advocate for open, flexible, inclusive and equitable education together with the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE),
We pay tribute to the leadership of Globethics.net Executive Director, Prof. Dr Obiora Ike and welcome the incoming Executive Director, Prof. Dr Fadi Daou, and
We, as a global community of individuals and institutions, commit ourselves to building new bridges together, to placing ethics and values at the heart of quality education for a more peaceful, just, inclusive, united and sustainable world.
