null GIVING VOICE TO VALUES: Exploring Applications in Organizational Settings

Back by Popular Demand! Mary Gentile will offer a workshop that builds on the concepts she presented to the ERC Fellows in July.

WHEN: Tuesday, January 18, 2011 from 2:00 to 5:30 pm

LOCATION: Hotel Palomar, Arlington, Virginia (Same location as the ERC Fellows Meeting)

Dr. Mary C. Gentile will share a ground-breaking new approach to preparing business managers and leaders for values-driven decision making. Drawing on both the actual experience of business practitioners as well as cutting edge research, GIVING VOICE TO VALUES (GVV) fills a long-standing and critical gap in our understanding of how to enable ethical practice. Rather than a focus on ethical analysis, GVV focuses on ethical implementation and asks the question: “What if I were going to act on my values? What would I say and do? How could I be most effective?”

In this 3.5 hour session, Gentile will present the origins, drivers and rationale behind the GVV approach to thinking and teaching about values-driven leadership, and then invite participants to engage in an interactive workshop format to explore the potential of this approach for application in their own organizational settings. Through presentation, small group working sessions and plenary discussion, participants will gain:

  • An understanding of how the Giving Voice To Values approach differs from traditional approaches to ethics education and training, and why that difference is so critical, particularly for practitioner audiences;
  • An understanding of the seven core principles of the Giving Voice To Values approach to values-driven leadership development;
  • A set of tools and concepts that will inform their own educational program design;
  • The opportunity to contribute to and benefit from a real time, collaborative endeavor to develop and pre-test the next iteration of the GVV curriculum for corporate application;
  • An opportunity to examine some of the foundational materials (readings, exercises, cases, etc) in the Giving Voice To Values collection.
Participants will leave with a new toolkit for innovative, practical, implementation-oriented values-driven leadership development.
