In March 2018 the Lux Terra Leadership Foundation, in partnership with the MacArthur Foundation, introduced a series of trainings and public enlightenment activities on the effective use of religious institutions, networks and resources in fighting corruption and promoting integrity and accountability in Nigeria.
The project, which aims to fight against corruption and cultivate the culture of integrity and accountability in Nigeria capitalising on the institutions, networks and resources of Christian and Muslim religious groups, started on 26 March 2018 with a brainstorm session.
The event gathered different stakeholders, including Christian and Islamic Scholars, lawyers, artists and representatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the National Orientation Agency and Civil Society Groups. These stakeholders came together to share and generate ideas on the effective use of Islamic and Christian institutions and resources to fight corruption. Director, Obiora Ike, was invited to attend the brainstorm session at the Lux Terra Leadership Foundation in Abuja and share his international experience, in Europe and Africa, in the fight against corruption.
Obiora shared the importance of ethics in education in societies: starting from young age, through higher education to train ethical oriented, visionary people who are willing, selfless and determined to serve their people with values-driven leadership. Access to values-oriented education comes from ethical integrated curricula, resources and skills to help avoiding corruption and abuses from leadership. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between continents to ‘share values and experiences and contextualise them and adapt them within our own areas'.
One of the outcomes of the session will be the production of a suitable training curriculum and manual on the effective use of Islamic and Christian institutions and resources to fight corruption.
