To Hope is Not to Dream but to Turn Dreams into Reality
Dear Globethics.net Participants, dear Friends,
With the successful launch of the much-announced Consortium on Ethics in Higher Education in Geneva on 23 June 2017, Globethics.net has taken the matter of the urgency to integrate ethics in education seriously and with action. From 21 to 23 June 2017, several leading university vice-chancellors, professors and actors in education from 16 countries representing about 60 institutions of educational endeavour at the tertiary level joined the Inaugural meeting of the Globethics Consortium on Ethics in Higher Education.
At the conclusion of the three-day encounter, participants pledged to become founding members alongside other stakeholders present agreeing to work and cooperate more closely, to utilise available and updated tools and resources on ethics for their curriculum development, training and research, to promote international and inter-university programmes to tackle issues affecting the higher education sector, some of which include: corruption, developing research ethics and methodology, governance issues in institutions, plagiarism, training and capacity building, access to tools, resources and modules already tailor-made by an international group of colleagues around the topic of ethics, all geared towards the overall theme of building up and forming the next generation of global leaders worldwide, the youth, who are the future.
Participants agreed that there is no time to waste in the articulation of programmes and projects that are mutually beneficial among higher education institutions from the global north and majority south towards promoting the formation of the future generation of leaders imbued with values for sustainable development and the promotion of peace.
The Consortium meeting ably facilitated by Professor Arnold Smit, Head of Social Impact at the Stellenbosch University Business School, South Africa and inspired by speeches from renowned practitioners and keynote speakers with an ebullient programme of workgroups in round table discussions and focused on thematic and structured areas of ethical integration for a better society equipped all participants for the radical decisions undertaken.,
It is expected that following the Geneva Europe meeting, further interventions shall be made at the regional and national levels for the Consortium to take root in Asia, Latin America, the USA and Canada and in Africa. Meanwhile, seven institutions have signed the Consortium Agreement as founding members. Another 27 teachers and research fellows have signed on as individual associates and experts on ethics in higher education. The invitation is now open and extended to higher education institutions, business schools, universities, vocational training schools, research fellows and teachers, interested participants and civil society institutions involved with ethics and values-driven models in education to register their interest and participate as members of the Consortium. The news is on our Globethics website: Media Release: Launch of new Consortium on Ethics in Higher Education.
It is a great joy and privilege to serve the field of ethics and education towards fulfilling the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the UNESCO Framework for Action 2030. We are convinced that the path of the future of humanity is to turn dreams into reality. During the meeting, one of our keynote speakers, Professor Simon Lee, said in relation to the choosing of the name of Liverpool Hope University that "To hope is not to dream but to turn dreams into reality". It is hope founded on vision and action that drives the Globethics.net Foundation and the new Consortium on Ethics in Higher Education.

Cristina Calvo / Humberto Shikiya / Deivit Montealegre (Eds.)
ISBN 978-2-88931-199-6-Globethics.net Focus No. 43
