Women in (Islamic) Higher Education
Being a woman in many parts of the world is a challenge. Being a woman in Higher Education is another challenge. While their male counterparts have been able to pursue their studies to the level of postdoctoral degrees, in many cases receiving degrees from prominent international universities, many women heed to their reproductive roles and often postpone their careers. Additionally, even though there is no written regulation in Indonesian universities that states women cannot take leadership positions, the lack of Gender Equity policies in most universities often becomes a barrier for a woman's career.
This is worsened by the fact that some male professors, especially within Islamic Higher education Institutions, often refer to biased and misogynistic hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad), which perceive women as less than men.
I was once the Head of a Study Program at an Indonesian Islamic university. In a first monthly meeting attended by male colleagues, they shared dirty jokes. I stood up and left the room. The same was repeated at the second meeting and I was about to leave when asked "why". I said that until they behave in my presence in a respectable way then I would cease to attend the meetings with them. It worked! And the lewd conversation stopped.
I think we as women, especially as Muslim women working in Higher Education, need to first understand all of what is said in the Islamic Foundation texts about women, which I believe to be quite progressive. Then we need to be brave in taking a leadership role at the university and be firm in our relations with men.
