Responsible Academic Leadership

The recent Globethics.net publication on ‘Ethics in Higher Education' covers an array of strategic opportunities and risks faced by higher education leaders seeking to achieve sustainability and growth in a technologically challenging, highly innovative, and rapidly changing milieu. Notwithstanding the breadth of issues, the one constant is the re-connection with the notion of the university as an arena of thought-leadership and values-driven responsible citizenship. Today's university leader must be able to balance the core business of the academic project, whilst simultaneously achieving the tenets of good governance, including ethical probity.  An emerging area of emphasis in this latter regard is the way higher education institutions (HEIs) today choose to deal with personal, research and other data in their possession.

In the course of their functions, HEIs accumulate vast amounts of information (including personal data) and through the application of analytical techniques they can search, aggregate and cross-reference large data sets with relative ease. These solutions present exciting opportunities with great potential for a generally-improved student experience - but it's not that simple! Big data analysis may equally lead to (often unintended) discrimination, as students are excluded because their information is excluded from the results or the quality of their data is poorer. As the technology itself is typically ethically neutral, it is for the institution using the data to ensure the ethics of the outcomes and good data governance lies at the heart of this. Universities using data analytics must be as alert to the risks as they are to the opportunities and should be able to provide assurance to the data subjects that they have proper data governance instruments in place. As HEIs strive for innovation, ethics should never be compromised.

These are some of the central academic and governance issues that will be discussed at the upcoming Globethics Consortium on Ethics in Higher Education in Geneva in June 2017, where university leadership will have the opportunity to share best practices on integrating good governance and academic scholarship towards a responsible and sustainable higher education system.

Ethics for Successful Learning and Social Harmony in Burundi

On 10 April 2017 young people at the International School (École Internationale) in Bujumbura, the capital city of Burundi, took part in a workshop on ‘Ethics as a Foundation for Successful Learning and Social Harmony'. The event followed a workshop held in Bujumbura on 19 December 2016 with the aim to make young people aware of the important place of ethics in learning, learning which otherwise could be shallow, misguided and even sometimes damaging, for example when grades and qualifications are attained through fraudulent means. It was also an opportunity to make the case to the youth for the contribution of ethical thought and practice to the achievement and maintenance of social harmony and stability. Search for Non-Violent and People-Centric Development (2017)

John M. Itty
ISBN 978-2-88931-185-9

Market-centric development is not only unjust, inequitable, unsustainable, but also violent. The end of development-aggressive consumption, and the means—aggressive production, trade and accumulation—make development anti-people. The more marketable wealth is produced, the more ill-fare is brought instead of welfare. Financialisation of the economy and neglect of the ecology bring financial and ecological crises. Neglect of non-marketable wealth, like love, caring, sharing, concern for others and social/cultural capital, are the reasons for this malady. Only people-centric development that fosters the production of non-marketable wealth along with marketable wealth can promote welfare. In this book, the author highlights the importance of reducing the production of wealth with negative utility, the need to foster the spirituality of development, and suggests a few non-market programmes to promote people-centric development.
