Day 2, Lab 8. The "Committees for Research" is a huge challenge that should not be neglected in multi-cultural and multi-lingual academia.

The Global Ethics Forum 2016 - Lab 8The discussion moderated by Deivit Montealegre, PhD holder from FLACSO, Argentina, raises many issues related to ethics in the research institutions. Florencia Luna, from CONICET (National Scientific and Technical Research Council) in Argentina, explains that there are 3 types of committees. First, there are ontological committees, which oversee what is said and how different institutions behave. Second, the existence of committees in hospitals and medical schools is relevant, regarding ethics conduct in research where the human beings and animals are involved. Finally, the role of research committees in academic field, have an important place in defining ethics protocols and the methodology conduct.

"We are increasingly interconnected and values should be transmitted through studying", said Andras Ocsai. The researcher from Corvinus University of Budapest (Hungary) considers that in terms of research and teaching, values should be conformed on international level, but beginning on micro level. Prof. Kenneth Offukanzi, University of Nigeria, agreed with this position and specified that committees for research should not be limited to universities, but also should include different actors as governments or even economic actors, like investors. Based on existing knowledge, the committees should exchange internationally and have some global supervisor.

All speakers and participants agreed on fact that the initiative for the research committees need to be undertaken by motivated people, specialised in ethics, philosophy or theology, that refers to bottom-up vision. However, the top-down action is also required, to improve institutional structure and make this initiative effective by policy making.

The message addressed to political and economic leaders should be clear: Committees for Research are necessary for science, research and education.
