Course Description

Leading with responsibility and integrity emerges as one of the central topics of contemporary societal and economic debate. How can people provide leadership in the professional world and in the world at large that responds to the public expectations and ethical principles of transparency, accountability and respect of diversity?
This course aims to develop critical thinking about the theory and practice of responsible leadership. It will examine different theories, and will focus on dialogical leadership which enables transparent and effective deliberation. The thinking about leadership can apply to all sectors, though much of the leadership theory discussed emerges from business studies.

  • Critically evaluate leadership theories, to apply theories on leadership in different contextual situations 
  • Identify challenges with regard to leadership in practice and investigate in responsibility as guiding ethical principle for leadership
  • Create an ethical framework of understanding leadership related to business, societal and cultural environments
  • Draw upon learning contents from across the course to create meaningful and values-based statements on leadership within their own professional contexts.

The learning outcomes are embedded in the overall objective to allow participants to understand and engage creatively with the impact of institutional transformation based on ethics for the benefit of their institutions, companies and of society as a whole.

Entry Requirements

The registration for this online course is organised according to the enrolment regulations and the policy on entry requirements of in accordance with the official course programme documentation as approved and made public by the institution's governing bodies.    

Specific Accreditation of Prior Learning Arrangements

In this online course lays particular emphasis on the practical professional experiences participants bring into the learning journey. Teaching and/or administrative experiences in higher education institutions are considered as assets for participation. Experiential learning of this type will be treated as part of's Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) as outlined in its official documentation, in particular in its Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) handbook and in the corresponding policy document. The policy document explains the procedure and criteria for recognition.    

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to obtain the qualification awarded at the end of the online course, participants have to complete the module according to the syllabus and fulfill all requirements, in particular they will have to submit a final written assignment and a final online discussion forum contribution.   

Qualification Level

This module is an on short-term module for graduates, professionals and other executives working in various professional sectors. The module corresponds to the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) Level 4/Level 5, and is comparable to the level of a Swiss Certificate in Advanced Studies (CAS).    

Access to Further Studies

Successful participants of this online course are eligible for further studies in the online qualifications pathway leading, upon completion of all three online modules, to an Executive Certificate of Ethics in Higher Education, CSR and Sustainability for Professionals in Higher Education.
